Michael Conway joined 8 New Square as a member of chambers in 2017. During his pupillage year he assisted with the full range of intellectual property matters, including a number of major patent actions as well as design right, trade mark and copyright cases.

Michael has a background in molecular biology and genetics, having obtained a degree in molecular and cellular biochemistry from Oxford followed by a PhD: “Improving genetic approaches to mosquito population control” from Oxford. Prior to his PhD he was a senior research fellow at the Russell Group of Universities – a think-tank and strategy group representing leading UK universities.

Michael is currently instructed, along with two senior members of chambers, on a major biotech action expected to reach trial in 2018.

(Patents - validity, infringement: case settled before trial) – assisted with settling expert reports, notices of experiments, preparation for and attendance at CMC and PTRs, and in preparing for and drafting skeleton argument for trial.

Varian Medical Systems International AG v Elekta Ltd [2017] EWHC 712 (Pat)
(Patents - validity, infringement): - assisted in drafting skeleton arguments for trial and a PTR, and preparation of cross examination.

Fujifilm Kyowa Kirin Biologics Co Ltd v Abbvie Biotechnology Ltd [2017] EWCA Civ 1; [2016] EWHC 3383 (Ch)
(Patents - appeal; application to strike out): assisted counsel with legal research and attended hearings.

Liqwd Inc v L’Oreal (UK) Ltd
(Patents). Assisted in preparation of pleadings, legal research and disclosure review in a patent infringement action.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc v Kymab Ltd
(Patents – appeal; infringement, validity): assisted in drafting skeleton argument for appeal.

Spin Master Ltd v PMS International Group [2017] EWHC 1477 (Pat)
(Registered designs – infringement, threats): assisted in drafting skeleton argument for and attending CMC, drafting pleadings and reviewing evidence.

Epoch Co Ltd v Character Options Ltd [2017] EWHC 950 (IPEC)
(Patents – validity): assisted counsel in drafting skeleton argument and preparing for hearings on costs and on leave to appeal; subsequently assisted in drafting grounds of appeal and skeleton argument in application for permission to appeal.
